Our Approach

The Art of Balance is a holistic health approach designed to address the unique dynamic of each person's body and mind.

Our main objective is to help you reduce stress and tension, regain balance, increase stamina, stimulate the inmune system and enhance the natural healing power of the body.

We do this by drawing from many ancient and complementary disciplines of alternative healing that include Bowen Technique, The Bars Access Consciousness, Shiatsu, Reflexology, Aromatherapy and essential oils, Raindrop Technique and Hatha Yoga.

Our mission is to help people attain healthier, happier, longer and more productive lives.

Who am I

Mind-Body connection

I am Rev. Barbara L. Finlayson. I became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1971 and worked in Hospitals for 8 years. During those years I noticed that although patients would heal, some never regained the strength or vitality they had once enjoyed, while others would make full recoveries. I sensed that there had to be more of a body-mind connection to healing. So started a lifelong sojourn into the healing power of the body.

My first endeavor was to become a Shiatsu practitioner. I studied with Waturo Ohashi at the Shiatsu Education Center of America and received my certification in 1982.Delighted at the success achieved with my clients, I went on to become certified in Bowen, Reflexology, Yoga, Rebirthing, Mari El, Flower Essences, Herbal Remedies, Spiritual Counseling. I also trained in Meditation, Crystals and chakra balancing, Aromatherapy and Essential Oils.

I believe my mission is to help others attain a longer, healthier, happier and more productive life. With that in mind, I developed The Art of Balance, a comprehensive approach that combines the best of all the healing modalities I have studied.

Body Work Therapies

Bowen Technique

Bowen is a gentle form of body work in which very subtle moves performed over the muscles and connective tissue send messages deep into the body, retrieving cellular memory of a preferred, relaxed, balanced way of well-being. Results can be remarkable, even from the first session; often only a few sessions are needed to correct the problem. The body is brought back to its natural pain free state.

Our feet support our bodies and specific parts of the feet relate to each organ. By stimulating these pressure points, the body releases tension and promotes healing.

In Japanese, Shiatsu means, “finger pressure”. Energy flows in our bodies through channels called meridians, which relate to specific physical, emotional and intellectual functions. Through injuries, stress or bad diet, energy becomes blocked causing chronic discomfort and physical disorders. A Shiatsu practitioner is trained to find these blockages using acupressure massage (given through the clothing) these blockages are opened and your body comes back into alignment allowing the body to function at it’s best.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga introduces you to the physical yoga postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayamas), deep relaxation and meditation (raja yoga). Yoga is a weight bearing exercise, which strengthens the bones and minimizes the onset of osteoporosis. The endocrine system, which controls the body’s production of hormones and calms the nervous system, becomes balanced through the use of stretches and sounds. When practiced over a six-month period it can increase lung capacity, reduce body weight, and decrease cholesterol and blood sugar levels.     R

The Bars Access Consciousness

A technique that releases energy by lightly touching points in your head and produces a deep sense of relaxation and peace. A simple, non invasive process that produces amazing results.

Other Healing Modalities

Aromatherapy - Essential Oils

Before pharmaceuticals these oils were used to kill bacteria, fungi and viruses. They have exquisite fragrances that balance moods, lift spirits and dispel negative emotions. They can stimulate nerves, regenerate tissue and even act to oxygenate and carry nutrients into the cells.

Raindrop Technique

A powerful, non-invasive tool, which helps to correct defects in the curvature of the spine. It reduces spinal inflammation and helps jump-start the immune system. This technique supports the body in balancing, clearing and aligning energy centers. Essential oils are dropped along the back from above the body and light strokes with the fingers work them into the spine.

Bowen Therapy for Kids

A baby with colic is one of the most trying experiences for the family. There is very little tradicional medicine can offer and pediatricians are often at a loss.

Bowen Technique is a safe and non invasive alternative to treating colic in babies. Some practitioners see results in only one session and relieved parents can't wait to recommend it to everyone they know. There are no contraindications or side effects and can help avoid the use of medications or long sleepless nights for the whole family.
